Can you put wetrooms on wooden floors in older houses? Would you need to step up into them to give you enough space to drain?

Geoff Wells, bathroom planning expert for Dolphin Bathrooms, comments:

“With an old home or cottage there are often particularly obtuse floorboards or timbers that have been sourced from wrecked ships etc. Where it is not possible to level the floorboards it wouldn’t be viable to construct a wetroom floor.

“However where you cannot level the floor there is an alternative system which would create a wetroom effect using a low profile shower tray. The installer would complete the following steps:

  • Cut the floorboards out (to the shape of the shower tray)
  • Place noggins across the joists and drop the low profile tray into the above space
Line the floor with 12ml ply.
  • Adhesive and tiling will raise the surface to the top of the tray creating a flush effect.
  • Step down into the tray which acts as a vessel to retain the shower water.
  • So rather than stepping up you would actually be stepping down into the tray.
